Summer heat is on and the sweat comes running freely, luckily for Clancy, he has Devon to mop his brow. Linstead Baptist Church is the place to be on what turned out to be a bright, sundrenched Saturday morning, it had been raining a bit earlier but it would appear that the hustle and bustle of the day's activities so far has consumed all the moisture in the once foggy morning air. Devon dutifully mops Clancy's brow to banish the small beads of sweat now appearing at regular intervals.
He turned around to glance at the crowd steadily streaming in and being guided to their seats by Mrs. Logan and Mrs. O'Connor,
They kept it closed for some reason which was not clear but when the signal came, and the groom's men and bride’s maid came marching up and then walked to the far corner on either side of the Alter and positioned themselves Clancy exhaled, its action time.
The organ stroke up the tune of; here comes the bride, voices joined in and the side door open to the great relief of Clancy and many others who welcomed the rush of fresh air. Isn't it a bit premature singing that song at this point Clancy asked? I don't know Devon said, not too sure how these things work.
Clancy stared at the open doorway with great anticipation but nothing happened. They were still singing, following the cue from the many people whose attention was focused on the aisles straight down the middle of the hall, Clancy turned his head to see the approaching of the bride's maids followed by the flowers girl, then after a long pause the bride's clear, angelic voice came piercing the silence of the room with a song not too well known but very appropriate for the occasion.
You are my treasure and my darling I possess the world's greatest treasure, the treasure of happiness... she was stunning, Clancy was not expecting to see her like this, it was supposed to be a small wedding, she was going to be wearing a simple but somewhat elegant dress, we just get it over and done, but now she's all decked out in white princess cut, trails and all, white knitted gloves above the elbows and the hugest of bouquet. He heard the awes and whispers she is beautiful some were clearly heard saying including one of Clancy's sisters to the other.
The minister did his thing, too slowly Clancy thought to himself, and with the powers invested in me as a minister, I now pronounced you man and wife, Mr. Clancy K. O'Connor you may kiss the bride. His shaking hands reached up to pull back the veil for a clearer and closer look at her beautiful face and luscious lips, he leaned in and oblige her begging(s) with a hot lingering kiss.
The oohs ahs and clapping followed, and then came the whispers, Clancy clearly heard the word FAT, and distinctively heard the word; pregnant, from the corner of his eyes, he saw his sisters in whispering debate, he still is not sure what the issue might have been but thinks he has a fairly good idea, Helen's countenance had been somewhat altered for the reminder of the evening from that point on.
Clancy had been searching his bride’s (now becoming his wife’s) face and body language trying to decipher whether or not she might have heard what was said from the whispers and to see what effect if any they might have had on her mood. But she didn't seem a bit perturbed.
