Devon had just showed off his dad’s new V W beetle to his friend Clancy as part 1 of his series of surprises, part 2 was revealing that he now owns the Ford cortina. Clancy is about to find out what is the part 3 of Devon’s 3 parts surprise package. Without further delay, here is ep #008 Let’s go up on the hills.
Devon toot the horn to which an unfamiliar face appeared in the 2nd floor window and then disappeared, a side door open out of which came a middle aged women wearing an apron and looking rather dusty all over. Sorry about my shabby appearance, as you know I'm in the middle of my renovation project, she said, who is this fine young man with you?
My friend Clancy, you met him before Devon said looking back and forth at both of them. I did? Said the woman. We did? Said Clancy.
You met at the funeral. Oh yes, Mrs. Logan, your late uncle's wife? Widow whispered Devon.
Ronald Logan was the elder brother of Devon's dad, he'd migrated to England in the early 60's with his family; wife Myrtle, sons David and Lance, Debbie was the baby then. Two more children was born to the family on the other side of the pond; Wendy and Greg. All the children are in London except for Debbie who is here with her mom and seems hell bent on staying put.
Ron Logan had died in London and in keeping with his wishes, his remains was brought home and buried in the Ewarton cemetery.
Shortly after the funeral the family along with all the others who came with them, returned to wherever in the world it was that they came from, all except Debbie.
Debbie stayed with her next of kin in White house while her mom, brothers and sister went back to England. Her mother Myrtle making it clear that she was coming home... for good.
Although Clancy had been there before, he had not seen the house like this. The main living areas where the family lives is on the topmost floor. That's what Clancy remember when he was there in the past.
He had gone with Mr. Logan (that's Percival, father of Devon and the others) the house was rented out and it was Mr. Logan who was in charge of maintenance and upkeep as well as collecting the rent. So Clancy and Devon had gone "for the ride" a few times when they went out there.
The lower floor was under burglar bars and lock-and-keys. That space used to be a grocery shop when the elder Logan's family was here, well so says Devon. Below that was just an empty, unfinished space. Now that too is a space under construction, Mrs. Myrtle (as Clancy now take to calling her in an attempt to avoid confusion with the Mrs. Logan he long knew to be Devon's mom). Mrs. Myrtle said that these two spaces are going to be for income generation when finished.
Clancy sneezed and wiped his eyes, the dust in the place was affecting him in more ways than one, Mrs. Myrtle points to the small box on the window sill; take a dust mask she said, oh lord I'm so sorry it's dusty in here I forgot to tell you.
Devon as well as Clancy put mask on and then Clancy brush on his pants in an effort to remove "at least" some of the white dust which was settling on his uniform, it was only Monday and he usually wear one suit of uniform for 2 and/or 3 days. At this rate he knows he'll have to change tomorrow.
On entering the 2nd floor, Clancy quickly looks around, being careful not to touch the walls after being warned by their host and further by the sign which says; wet paint. But Clancy's eyes were secretly looking for something else.
As of yet, he hasn't seen Debbie, the way Devon's eyes seems to be zooming in on him suggest that he was picking up on the anxiety of the moment too.
The flip flop clicking sounds of slippered feet descending the concrete stairs outside the open louvre windows got both young men turned around to watch a pair of legs clad in grey sweat pants gets longer as they descends the stairs, disappearing for a brief moment behind the walled up spot between the window and the door.
The latch rattle then Debbie follow the opening door to enter the room, hi.ee she said as she hugs Devon then Clancy. Her mother re-entered the room from somewhere in the back... I thought you weren't coming down, she said. I'm here now, Debbie replied, actually it's you who should come up since that's where we live and not here, they laughed.
So you guys came to work or what? That's what we have here and lots of it. Actually, I was just thinking of leaving for home, I’ve got lots of things to do over there too, not the Reno type Clancy said swiping his right hand in an arched semicircle... like this here, but work anyway.
Just then, Devon glanced at his watch and then at the door. I did kinda want to talk to you though said Debbie, maybe we can link up some time soon. Emphasis being on soon. What about Clancy inquire. Nothing to get too excited about but... it is kinda important anyways.
You could come along for the ride Devon said.
Are you coming back here? Asked Debbie
Yay, I'll bring you back.
Okay then I will come along.
