Walking from Ewarton square to Whitehouse housing scheme may seem like a tall order depending on the day of the week, one’s mindset and their reason for going there. Clancy has found himself at a place and moment in time when he has to reason it all out and that’s just what he did here in episode 007.
It has been 3 days since Clancy has seen or heard from his two friends.
This is the early 8os living in small town Jamaica, only the well-to-do has home telephone then and those were mainly for dealing with important matters.
This is the case in the Logan's household. Devon is not hindered in any way from using the house phone but contacting Clancy by such means was not possible since he (Clancy) doesn’t have one home, the other way is for Clancy to call which he has done on a few occasions when he called from the pay phone by the post office in Ewarton square.
This time however, Clancy is not inclined to make any contact, at least not yet. He needs to process the details of the weekend. He was torn between anger and admiration for Devon, why was it that he seems to be setting him up for ridicule at times, however the times when he was defending Clancy is certainly not lost on him.
Maybe he was waiting for Clancy to call or come over. But Devon is the one with access to a car even if the phone is not feasible. For Clancy to go to White house where Devon live, he will need to walk all the way or parts of the way. if he is lucky to get a taxi from Charlton he still would have to walk from Ewarton to White house or pay extra for the taxi to get him there, he was in no mood to do either.
It's Monday evening and Clancy left at the final bell when school ends. He did not stay back for practice he just wants to be out of there. On the walk out of the compound heading towards the gates, he saw the blue car pulled up and stop.
He thought it might be a taxi, let it go he said to himself, there will always be another one.
Exiting the gate he noticed that the car was still there. Clancy did a double take, that's when he realized that it was Devon's.
He sidestep the line he was about to join and went over to the car. Devon got out on his approach, walked around to the rear of the car, "what’s up he said, they exchanged hugs, slapped palms together bump shoulder and slaps on the back.
What are you doing here? Clancy asked. Just passing he replied. This don't look like passing to me
OK, so I lied; what's up with you dude, you just dropped out on me; on every body it seems. I saw you Friday night, the beginning of the "weekend" emphasis on the weekend. And who are these everybody that you are talking about? Well maybe not everyone but you seem to be copping out on your team right now as it is.
Clancy did not answer, turned his head the other way and gaze out the window. That was a low blow dude he muttered under his breath. I am not trying to beat up on you buddy, Devon said after pulling the car off to the side and stop. I'm not out to get you he reiterate looking Clancy square in the eye, believe me, I'm your friend maybe the only one you've got and though it might not seem so now, I'm looking out for your interest.
It is said that the worst thing one can say sometimes is actually the truest thing one can say and I'm telling you now; you've been acting like a punk ass kid these past couple of days and you would do well to grow up and start acting like a man if you are, Devon continue after a brief pause. I'm a man said Clancy again under his breath. Well you are making me (and some other people I know) begin to wonder.
Upon the approach to the house where Devon live, Clancy noticing the car parked in the driveway said; seems you have company? Why? Devon ask. There’s a car in your driveway said Clancy, well that's the surprise I told you about earlier, part of it at least.
And what's the other part? Asked Clancy. Parts Devon corrected, parts? Inquired Clancy,
Devon bring the car to a stop, close the engine and bracing himself back with both hands on the steering wheel, said Clancy this car you are looking at, is my dad’s new ride... really said Clancy as he cracked the door open to ease himself outside, he wants to get a closer look but then sitting himself back down said, what's the... the, other part or parts? Parts said Devon, part 2 is; this is my ride. Woah, congratulations bro. Well to both of you, you know your dad as well as yourself.
I'm not too big on the bug though Clancy whispered pointing at the VW beetle in the driveway in front of them.
They both chuckle. Dad said it's very reliable and economical, he said furthermore now that his family has grown and starting to fly the nest, he no longer need a big car and definitely not 4 doors this little guy suits him just fine for him and mom.
My sister Junie seems to agree with him too, she's got herself a Datsun "2 doors" they laughed as they went inside the house.
June or Junie as she's affectionately called is the eldest of the Logan's 3 children she's the brain of the family a 3rd year law student at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Mona, she used to travel daily during the 1st year but it was starting to take a toll on her that's when the decision was made for her to stay by uncle Dennis. Yes that Dennis.
The Halls are on mom's side of the Logan's family. Nowadays Junie comes home on weekends, sometimes two or three weeks may past without her coming, that's when mom and dad "mom more so than dad" will drive into town to see her "and the rest of the family". Jacquie is the baby of the family, at 14 she's attending Charlemont high school, Devon 18 is sandwiched in the middle
The meal was delicious and conversations delightful as usual, Clancy was a bit apprehensive at first not because he didn't like the foot or anything like that but more so because he didn't want to "waste" his mother's cooking as she often chided him.
But Devon had promised a part 3 of his series of surprises and that includes them going somewhere after dinner. Clancy agreed to go, he was anxious to find out what the surprise was and he further convinced himself that his mom won't be overly worried since it is the custom of late for him to get home late(ish) due to after school practice.
Since he did not stay for practice this evening, he has some time to spare.
