There was nothing to set this day apart, it was as ordinary a day as any. Being well ahead of schedule for part #2 of his regular circuits, Donald was savoring the drive on this stretch of the roadway which, at this hour of the day, there are usually very few (if any at all) vehicular traffic and today is no different.
Other than the pedestrian who crosses the street on the crosswalk marking blocks, between stop signs 2 and 3 on the stretch of road leading towards the platform to the train station as is the custom.
The 8; 10 train being due to arrive within four minutes, causes these last few pedestrians to show a bit more urgency. Up ahead, the street sweeper truck is almost at the intersection of the metropolitan and Dunkirk when Donald; driving the full size school bus, caught up with and proceeded to overtake the sweeper truck.
He didn’t get to finish that maneuver before he was surprised by a crunchy metallic sound. Hitting the brakes and glancing back via his rearview mirrors, Donald saw what had caused that sound. The left rear view mirror of the sweeper truck was wedged into the hindmost window of his school bus. After activating his hazard lights, Donald went out to investigate further and noticed that; other than a few scratch lines near the rear end of his bus, there were no damages.
The sweeper truck didn’t fare as well though. There were broken glasses and twisted metals for him to show but still, nothing worth writing home about. After fetching an accident report form, Donald suggested that they fill out the report (as is customary) no; said Mr. Sweeper guy, he’s calling the authorities.
Donald glanced at his watch, on seeing the time slipping away he said; these are fairly minor damages which can be adequately dealt with by a report form and further stated that he has another set of children to go pick up for school. Not my problem said Mr. Street sweeper. So wait they did, for the arrival of the “authorities”.
While waiting, Donald has time to review the situation and the scene. That’s when he noticed the bigger picture and it was very disturbing to say the least of what he saw. This was no accident, that sweeper truck driver deliberately jammed his rearview mirror into the side of the school bus. Standing there on the sidewalk and looking back into the direction from whence they came, the real story began to unfold.
The sweeper truck was well ahead of the school bus, hence was able to cross over the pedestrian crosswalk well before the pedestrian enters onto the crosswalk blocks causing the school bus to come to a full stop and waited. While the bus wait, the sweeper truck went along doing what it does; sweeping.
Therefore it was well ahead and nearing the corner at the met. When Donald and his bus caught up with him and proceeded to past the slow-moving vehicle. Looking back now, Donald is amazed to see the full story printed out there for any and every one to see. Along the sidewalk, one could see the effects of the spinning brooms which are anchored beneath the sweeper truck, and designed to protrude outward when sweeping especially up against the curb and sidewalks removing trash and debris as it goes by and leaving behind a well swept street.
However, at the point where the “accident” happened, one could very clearly see that the sweeper has moved away about two feet from the curb and the vehicle “now stationary” is in a somewhat crooked position, which does not correspond with all that was showing along the entire stretch of road over which we’d just came and being revealed by the sweeper tracks.
In his mind, Donald could not help but wonder; why would a city employee been in possession of a very expensive piece of equipment owned by the Public, divert from the job which he is paid (very well) by the public to do, deliberately turn and use that piece of equipment as a weapon to inflict damages against a member of that same public who is paying for his salary and for that piece of property.
Then further, refusing from taking and using reasonable and generally acceptable means in order to expedite the process of rectifying the matter… HMMM. The public may very well be getting just what the public pays for
Question: Do you think this was a genuine accident, or was it staged? If staged, why?
